A Most Unusual Gift

Last week God offered me the most unusual gift...wet pants.

I had just arrived home from one of the most exciting and rewarding professional trips of my life. On the first day of the trip, an acquaintance with the power to change my professional life forever decided, out of nowhere, to back a project I've been working on for two years. On the second day, there were so many people who decided to join the Rise to the Occasion Program during Lent that I had to open a second cohort. And on the third day, a colleague was so excited by what was going on with the Catholic Mentor that we discussed a possible partnership.

By the time I arrived home, I was on cloud nine. I came home and told my kids, "You see, daddy wasn't crazy to quit his job and make this big leap. Daddy's got this!" About five minutes later my daughter (going through the ups and downs of potty training) went to the bathroom all over me.

My first emotion was frustration, I mean what kind of a hello is that!? My second emotion was appreciation. And my third was delight (I started laughing).

Daddy doesn't have this. God does. Daddy isn't the reason things are going to be alright. Jesus' gift on the cross is.

Vainglory can slip in, almost unnoticed, accompanied by good intentions and sincere desires. And it had slipped into my heart and mind. That is, until my pants were wet.

In our mess, I hugged my daughter, thanked her and thanked God...for wet pants and little reminders of my one job: Seek ye first the Kingdom. Then whatever comes, comes. Whatever doesn't...doesn't.

P.S. the picture is what Maggie thought of the incident!
