Who Do You See In the Mirror?
"Jack, from where I sit, you're on the verge of becoming a coward and a hypocrite."
This has been said to me four times in my life. Not in those exact words every time, but the sentiment was the same. And each time it was said...
The person who said them was right.
I heard it once said, "Be careful who you become in pursuit of what you want."
Every time this was said to me, I was pursuing something good either in the wrong way or in the wrong place. And it was destroying me.
There’s an old story about a German Ambassador to England who seemed destined to become the leader of his country. Given his rising status, he was asked to host a dinner for King Edward VII. The King was notorious for hosting depraved parties filled with drunkenness and prostitution. Two things the Ambassador had no interest in participating in.
The King, however, made it very clear what he expected the Ambassador to do. In response, the Ambassador shocked the world with his resignation. When asked about the decision, the Ambassador is said to have responded with, “I did not want to wake up the next morning and see a pimp in the mirror staring back at me.”
When you look in the mirror, who do you see?
Who do you never want to see?
And, most importantly, when you look in the mirror who do you dream of seeing?
